*** 15th-century watermill hotel with a working waterwheel in central Perth

Setting & History

The hotel is established in a 15th-century converted watermill where guests can watch water trickling through the original water wheel from the garden, reception area and Lounge Bar. Glass viewing panels in the floor of the bar area let visitors see the mill lade running beneath the building. This historical structure is located 5 to 10 minutes walk from Perth city center, with Scone Palace, Branklyn Garden, and Perth Racecourse nearby.

Dining & Bar

The Brasserie restaurant offers signature dishes and river views for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a menu that includes Spanish and local Scottish options. The bar serves a wide selection of drinks and light snacks, with Diana and other staff providing friendly service in a lounge area that includes the glass floor water feature. Breakfast is a self-service buffet offering hot and cold items including haggis, sausages, sourdough bread, and fruit juices.

Business & Events

The hotel has meeting rooms accommodating up to 120 guests, offering flexible spaces tailored for corporate events, conferences, and intimate weddings. The business center provides fax and photocopying services, and the hotel offers discounted rates and packages for group bookings. The location is close to Perth Concert Hall and Perth Museum, making it convenient for business and leisure alike.

Family & Pet-Friendly

The hotel is dog-friendly, allowing pets in the hotel with a garden at the back where dogs can run. Children under 12 eat free from the kids menu, and the hotel has a kid-friendly buffet and children's menu available. A cot or extra bed can be provided in the room for families, and staff can arrange late check-out flexibility on request.

Parking & Accessibility

Free parking is available on site for up to 50 cars, though spaces are not reserved and fill quickly; a public pay-and-display car park is nearby. Accessible parking spaces are located directly outside the hotel entrance, and the hotel offers accessible rooms with level access shower and grab rails. Guests with mobility issues should note there is no lift and rooms are accessed via stairs; staff can assist with luggage.

Guests consistently appreciate the Mercure Perth's convenient location near shops and the city centre. The hotel's reception area makes a great first impression, and many find the preserved original features, such as the decorative accents and tartan features, to be a highlight. The on-site restaurant is frequently mentioned, offering a varied menu, and the enclosed garden at the back, is a bonus; some guests, however, have noted that rooms can get quite warm, even without the heating on.

Acceptable Stay

central location helpful staff good breakfast warm room loud equipment flickering lights
The hotel boasts a central location. The staff were helpful and friendly. I found the breakfast selection to be quite good with many options.
The room was quite warm, and there was no air conditioning. I could not open the window after dark because of loud equipment right outside. I also noticed lights flickering in the bathroom.
